FAQ

Q – Where can I buy the sensor?2019-10-23T17:15:13+00:00

Please contact sales@ClearSign.com. We would love to learn more about your specific use case and determine if the sensor is the solution for you.

Q – Can the sensor detect a plugged nozzle?2019-10-23T17:14:31+00:00

Yes, the sensor can be used to detect a plugged nozzle. This is indicated by a drop in the normal operating signal. It is also possible to arrange multiple sensors to detect each nozzle independently, providing a higher fidelity to the burner operation.

Q – How can the sensor be used as a health monitor?2019-10-23T17:13:55+00:00

The flame signal provided by the sensor is related to the operating conditions of the flame. This includes the equivalence ratio, fuel type, and firing rate. If any of these parameters change, the signal will change. An operator can use the signal as a lifeline signal to see if there are any major deviations in the process. Furthermore, an operator can map out normal operating conditions with the signal produced by the sensor to assist them in achieving optimal operation.

Q – How fast is the response time?2019-10-23T17:13:33+00:00

Very fast! The sensor is capable of measuring at a rate of about 10 microseconds. However, this is much faster than the dynamics of a flame, therefore the sensor typically operates at a more useful millisecond timescale.

Q – What is the output of the sensor?2019-11-11T22:54:07+00:00

The sensor can provide standard outputs including an ON/OFF led indicator, dry contact relay, 0-5V, and 4-20ma.

Q – Can the sensor differentiate between a pilot flame and a main flame?2019-11-18T22:11:45+00:00

Yes, a pilot flame typically provides a smaller flame intensity signal than the main flame,  allowing the sensor to differentiate between the pilot and main flame.

Q – Does the sensor pickup nearby flames, such as in a multiburner furnace?2019-11-18T22:12:20+00:00

No, the sensor only detects a flame locally and will not produce a signal from nearby flames; this includes adjacent burners as well as opposed burners.

Q – Do the electrodes need to touch the flame?2019-11-26T19:49:30+00:00

No, unlike a flame rod the ClearSign Flame Sensor does not have to contact the flame. The electrodes are typically positioned upstream near the perimeter of the flame zone.
